Black Romance Matters: When Funmi Met Romance Talks Beverly Jenkins Indigo, and Why Black Love Matters to Her

Hello, I'm Funmi of When_Funmi_Met_Romance, and I love BLACK love.  I truly believe that at the intersection of Black Love and Literature you will find Beverly Jenkin's classic, Indigo.

Hester is a runaway slave.  She had black features, hands, and feet dyed purple from plantation work, and dark skin.  Here comes Galen, a true hero, and champion.  He treats her like a princess.  He spoils her and lets her know that he loves EVERYTHING about her.  She has no faults. I think the book is an ode to black women of the past and the present.  I want every black woman to be loved like Galen loved Hester.

Why does Black romance matter to you?

Black love is where you find the strength of our people.  The media tries very hard to paint this image of black people: the image of broken homes, unloveable black women, and callous black men.  It's just not accurate.  It can instill deep insecurity that manifests itself in terrible ways.  However, every time I read a black romance book, I feel like I'm fighting against that image.  I feel so warm, worthy, and strong.  We can't let others write our stories and change our narratives.  When I read good Black, love I feel like I'm seeing my heart on the page.  I'll never stop advocating for it.
